NuvaRing Lawsuits
The vaginal contraceptive ring manufacturer, Organon, which is a company owned by Schering-Plough, Inc. produces the product NuvaRing®. This product is the first and only vaginal birth control ring which has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It was approved in 2001. However, since that time, there have been many claims of serious side effects, including pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, strokes and heart attacks.
According to the company’s instructions, the NuvaRing® is a plastic ring that is placed in the vagina for three weeks. After the fourth week it is removed. During this 3-week period, the ring is designed to release two different hormones into the woman’s body.
One of the hormones that are released is an artificial progestagen, etonogestrel. Etonogestrel is considered a third-generation progestin. This synthetic product has been associated with greater risks for blood clots which are not the result in other artificial hormonal birth control products.
Etonogestrel is proprietary to Organon. The company, Schering-Plough is about to be acquired by the pharmaceutical company, Merck & Co.
The NuvaRing® dangerous side effects reported in its use include:
- Heart attack;
- Stroke;
- Pulmonary embolism, which is a blood clot in the lungs;
- Blood clots occurring in the legs, arms and pelvis; or
- Deep vein thrombosis.
There have been lawsuits filed by women who have suffered serious medical side effects and injury while using NuvaRing®. There is a multidistrict litigation (MDL) pending in the U.S. District for the Eastern District of Missouri in St. Louis.
If you or someone you know has been injured as a result of taking the pharmaceutical product and birth control device, NuvaRing®, please call us for an immediate free consultation.
