AndroGel
AndroGel is well-known and popularly use testosterone medication, application. However, the side effects of using AndroGel, a product manufactured by pharmaceutical AbbVie have led to thousands of lawsuit for cardiovascular harm to users. AndroGel has been advertised heavily in the United States and elsewhere since 2010. One of the several side effects is a heart attack. According to a recent report, 4,100 men are suing AbbVie claiming that AndroGel caused serious cardiovascular problems.
The lawsuits that are now pending in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago names six testosterone makers that include Endo, Eli Lilly and AbbVie. The companies are facing declining sales of AndroGel. Most of those obtaining the sales data and familiar with the product, have opined that the sales declines are related to the serious side effects AndroGel has been proven to cause.
Sales of AndroGel had exceeded $1.1 billion in 2012 but fell off from that high over the next few years. The FDA has now required additional warnings of the possible dangerous side effects for the testosterone salve.
AndroGel is claimed to cause serious medical conditions that cause levels of the hormone testosterone to drop precipitously, but the manufacturers of the drugs heavily marketed them to aging men to treat an “invented” disease called Low T. According to the pending lawsuits, it is alleged that otherwise healthy men sought out testosterone drugs like AndroGel as a treatment, but ended up instead with the high risk of cardiovascular side effects.
The supposed medical condition of men who are treated by AndroGel and other testosterone products is called hypogonadism. Hypogonadism refers to the diminished function of the testes or in women, ovaries. The result of this condition is a diminished sex hormone biosynthesis. Hypogonadism is also referred to testicular failure. A secondary problem is known as hypothalamus or the pituitary gland that produces testosterone. Generally speaking, hypogonadism may occur naturally before puberty. After puberty, the condition causes sexual difficulties, reduced fertility and it limits the absence of menstruation. The treatments include hormone replacement therapy particularly the AndroGel application and other products that have been marketed over these last few years.
The plaintiffs in the testosterone lawsuits now pending in federal court in Chicago are seeking compensation for the injuries alleged to have been caused by AndroGel and other versions of the hormone.
