Talcum Powder Lawsuits

Baby powder by all implications is a sweet smelling reminder of babies and small children and a reminder of diaper rash. But reports have surfaced that women using Johnson & Johnson baby powder products may be exposed to a significant risk of ovarian cancer. When the Johnson & Johnson baby power is used by woman for personal hygiene, the results of using the talcum powder in the genital area is being reported to increase the risk of developing the often times deadly cancer, ovarian cancer. The risk of developing ovarian cancer using baby powder or talcum powder has been noted to be as great as a 33% increased risk.

A jury verdict was entered in favor of a woman who had sued Johnson & Johnson claiming that she had been using the company’s Shower to Shower powder in her genital areas which she believed caused the development of ovarian cancer. In that case, the jury found in favor of the woman because of the increased risk of the cancer. The verdict against Johnson & Johnson was for negligence and for not notifying and warning consumers of the cancer risk when using its talcum powder products.

In a class action that has been filed against Johnson & Johnson, the plaintiff representative claimed that the baby powder that she regularly used for more than 50 years and assumed it was safe, was the cause of the increased risk of ovarian cancer. In the class action case it was claimed that there were no warnings on the product’s labels other than to keep the powder out of your eyes or avoid inhaling it. In the class action suit, it has been alleged that Johnson & Johnson was aware of the increased risk of ovarian cancer for women using the product from as far back as 1982. In fact, the American Cancer Society had warned that a new study showed women who used Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder for long periods of time were at increased risk of contracting ovarian cancer.

At the moment, Johnson & Johnson has denied that the talcum powder has caused or could cause ovarian cancer in women who use it in their genital area. The cases claiming the increased risk of ovarian cancer against Johnson & Johnson connected to both the class action and personal injury matters continue to be reviewed.
