Uptown is one of the 77 neighborhoods in the city of Chicago, Illinois. It is located on the city’s far north side. It is bordered on the north by Foster Avenue, Ravenswood Avenue to Montrose Avenue to Clark Street on the west, Irving Park Road on the south and Lake Michigan to the east. Uptown is home to historic Graceland Cemetery, Montrose Beach and a smaller neighborhood known as Little Vietnam along Argyle Street, with its concentration of Asian restaurants and grocery stores.
The Uptown Entertainment District is host to the Riviera Theatre, the Uptown Theatre, the Aragon Ballroom and the Green Mill Cocktail Lounge. It is experiencing a revival with various businesses including music shops, bookstores and restaurants opening in recent years. Uptown is a diverse neighborhood with smaller neighborhoods within it including Buena Park, Sheridan Park and Little Vietnam. The neighborhood also has a growing business district along Wilson Avenue. Uptown is accessible by the CTA. It can be reached via the Red Line at the Wilson, Lawrence or Argyle stops. In 1900, the Northwestern Elevated Railroad built its terminal near Montrose and Broadway Avenues. Once it was finished, Uptown became a “resort town” for those living downtown. For some time, all the northbound trains ended up in Uptown and it soon became known as an entertainment hub for city dwellers. Its name originated with the Uptown Store.
The neighborhood’s northern boundary once extended to Hollywood Avenue. In the 1950s more of the middle class was leaving Uptown to move to the suburbs. During this time the train lines were extended as well. Today the neighborhood is diverse in many ways. Lawrence Avenue still hosts many entertainment centers and Broadway Avenue near Wilson still has many businesses.
Uptown is 2.35 square miles in area. According to the U.S. Census of 2010, 51.6% of the population is White, 20% are African American, 14.2% are Hispanic, 11.38% are Asian and 2.78% are other.
The population of Uptown is 63,551. The median age is 34.3 and the median family income is $36,306. The median household income is $44,879, compared to Chicago as a whole, which is $43,628. In Uptown, 26.4% of the households are families, while in Chicago overall, 43.5% of the households are families.
The average household size in Uptown is 1.8. There are 32,440 total housing units. The median home value is $212,500. There are 7,354 owner-occupied housing units and 23,279 renter-occupied housing units. The median rent is $717 per month.
The percentage of foreign-born residents is slightly higher in Uptown than in the rest of the city – 26.7% in Uptown and 21.4% in the city as a whole.
Among Uptown residents, 76.4% hold a high school diploma and 39.5% hold a bachelor’s degree.
Uptown is served by five elementary schools, which are part of the Chicago Public School system. The Walt Disney Magnet School is also located there. There are also two Catholic elementary schools. Uplift Community High School serves students in the area. St. Augustine College and Harry S. Truman College are located in Uptown.
