Melrose Park is a village in Cook County, Illinois, located about 14 miles west of Chicago. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 25,411.
The suburb was the home of Kiddieland Amusement Park from 1929 until September 2009 when it was demolished. It is the current home of Maywood Park Racetrack, the Shrine of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, and Stern Pinball Inc., which is the world's last manufacturer of coin-operated pinball machines.
A Metra railroad station provides daily service from Melrose Park to downtown Chicago, with trains arriving at Union Station. Melrose Park is home to two hospitals -- Westlake Hospital and Gottlieb Memorial Hospital.
The ethnic composition of Melrose Park has included many Italians, with smaller numbers of German, Irish and Polish residents. Since 1894 the Feast of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel has been an annual Italian American celebration, which attracts thousands of celebrants.

Melrose was first settled in the late 1800s. In 1882, residents in the area voted to establish their own municipality, called simply "Melrose" until 1893, when the "Park" was added, and population in the area began to steadily increase. The first Italian-Americans arrived in 1888.
Around 1900, the population began to stagnate, but after World War I, the local economy was able to recover when several manufacturing companies moved into the village. New industry, along with Melrose Park's location next to the nearby Proviso freight yards, led to a steady increase in the number of available jobs. This continued after World War II, when more companies moved to Melrose Park. Zenith Electronics, Alberto-Culver, Jewel and International Harvester moved to the area. Both Alberto-Culver and Zenith have since shut down their operations there.
