Lincoln Square is a North Side community of the City of Chicago. It is located seven miles due north of Chicago’s Loop. Lincoln Square was originally an agricultural area that produced flowers, pickles and celery. When Chicago grew and the electric street railways began running in the 1890s, new residents came and settle in the Lincoln Square area. The Ravenswood elevated train opened in 1907. The farmland gave way to bungalows, 2-flats and small apartment buildings for Chicago’s expanding population at the turn of the 20th century.
By 1949, Lincoln Square had become a popular regional shopping district. Many commercial businesses and storefronts found their way to the intersection of Lincoln, Lawrence and Western Avenues. In 1978, the development of the Lincoln Square Mall and pedestrian plaza took hold.
This North Side Chicago community encompasses smaller neighborhoods of Ravenswood Manor, Ravenswood Gardens, Bowmanville and Budlong Woods. Now more than 44,000 people live in the neighborhood along with more than 1,000 small or medium sized businesses.
Transportation to and from the Chicago Loop is readily available on Chicago’s Brown Line “L”. Lincoln Square has a history of German influence. Today there are many shops catering to Thai or Middle Eastern cultures. Today the neighborhood is still home to German businesses, such as the Chicago Brauhouse, Merz Apothecary and Lutz Café & Bakery.
