LASIK eye surgery is one of the most popular elective surgeries in the U.S. and in Illinois. More than 6,000 Americans have undergone this surgery. Many physicians make LASIK eye surgery their sole practice area.

LASIK stands for laser in-situ keratomilieusis. The surgery is designed to correct vision in people who are nearsighted, farsighted or those with astigmatism. By design, the laser vision correction surgery reshapes the cornea, which is the front lens of the eye so that light traveling through the cornea can be clearly focused on the retina which is in the back of the eye. LASIK is one of those surgical techniques that accomplishes the reshaping of the cornea. The advantages of LASIK surgeries are that it corrects vision and in about 96% of the patients they end up with the desired vision. The vision correction is immediate. There is very little pain associated with the procedure because numbing drops are used to alleviate pain. There are no bandages or stitches. Further, eye surgeons can adjust the person’s vision later on if there are changes due to age or other reasons. Most people having LASIK surgery have little or no trouble and have a stunning reduction of the need of corrective contact lenses or eyeglasses.

In spite of the positives, there are some risks and disadvantages associated with LASIK eye surgery. For example, changes to the cornea cannot be reversed after LASIK.

Sometimes the advantages of LASIK surgery are oversold by doctors. Simply put, some persons are not candidates for LASIK because of pre-existing conditions. Unfortunately, in some LASIK surgery complications, eyeglasses or contact lenses do not often correct the vision problem.

LASIK surgeries come with many complications including dry eyes, glare, halos being seen around images, difficulty driving at night, fluctuating vision and vision loss. Some LASIK procedures end very poorly. There are reports of lawsuits that have been filed because of serious damage to the person’s vision. In one case, the patient underwent a surgery that resulted in 17 stitches in her eye. In another case, the patient suffered from a corneal epithelial cell growth. This condition results in blocked vision. Unfortunately some of the LASIK surgeries gone badly are irreversible.
