According to the Encyclopedia of Chicago, the Loop got its name from the shape the cable cars made as they turned around on a pulley in the center of the city. The Loop system was completed in 1897 and created a systematic transportation system that helped ensure the significance of Chicago’s historic influence in the development of the metropolis. All of Chicago’s 19th-century railroads were located at the edges of the central business district, which created a circle of stations around the center of the city.
The Loop has always been home to a diverse group of people. Even in the 1850s a host of different races and cultures inhabited this area in the city. After the expansion of the business district north along Michigan Avenue, more residential buildings were constructed in the Loop, which expanded facilities for educational and cultural programs.
