Lincoln Park is one of the 77 Chicago area neighborhoods. It’s located on the North Side, much of it bordering Lake Michigan. Lincoln Park also borders the community areas of Lakeview to the north, North Center to the northwest, Logan Square to the west, West Town to the southwest and Near North to the south.
The area now known as Lincoln Park was first set up as a U.S. Army post in 1824.
By 1836, the land north of Fullerton Avenue from Lake Michigan to Halsted Street could have been purchased at $150 per acre. In 1837, the City of Chicago was incorporated and the Lincoln Park neighborhood was made a part of its northern boundary. After the Civil War, the neighborhood was settled by Polish and German new arrivals. From the 1950s through the 1970s, Lincoln Park became home to many families arriving from Puerto Rico.
The reason that the neighborhood is named “Lincoln Park” is because the neighborhood borders much of the park of the same name. Inside the park is the Lincoln Park Zoo, Lincoln Park Conservatory, an outdoor summer theater, a canal, the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum and the Chicago History Museum. One of Chicago’s more popular beaches, North Avenue Beach, is in the Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Lincoln Park residents are served by Chicago Public Schools and several private schools, including Frances Parker School, K-12 and St. James Lutheran School, K-8. Lincoln Park is also known for its great restaurants, bars and entertainment.
Today Lincoln Park is one of the more popular visitor areas because of its many and varied attractions, including Lincoln Park and Lake Michigan.
Lincoln Park is one of the wealthiest and most expensive communities in which to live in Chicago. While the average single-family house is priced around $1 million, many homes in the area sell for more than $10 million. In 2007, Forbes magazine named the area between Armitage Avenue, Willow Street, Burling Street, and Orchard Street as the most expensive block in Chicago.
Lincoln Park is home to DePaul University, so it has a high concentration of college students.
The Lincoln Park neighborhood is accessible via the CTA’s Red, Brown and Purple Line trains as well as CTA bus service. By car, Lincoln Park can be reached by using Lake Shore Drive or the Kennedy Expressway. The zip code for the Lincoln Park neighborhood is 60614.
A number of well-known celebrities have lived in Lincoln Park. These include the late film critics, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, as well as the late chef Charlie Trotter.
Lincoln Park has two of the most architecturally significant churches in Chicago: St. Vincent's DePaul and St. Josephat's. St. Josephat's is a historical church of the Roman Catholic Archdioceses of Chicago, and its two massive bell towers are part of the skyline over Lincoln Park.
