The old Union Stock Yard was west of Canaryville, and many residents were employed there until the yard closed. Canaryville's name may originally have derived from the legions of sparrows that populated the area at the end of the 19th century, feeding off stockyard refuse and grain from railroad cars. It may also have been drawn from the gangs, known as “canaries” that lived in the area and committed crimes. Boasting a strong Democratic Party machine throughout the 20th century, Canaryville also embraced a rich Roman Catholic cultural life centered on St. Gabriel's Parish. With the post-WWII closing of the stockyards, the population in the area began declining. Still populated largely by residents of Irish descent, Canaryville now includes a sizeable Latino community as well.
