Calumet Heights is bounded by 87th Street on the north and South Chicago Avenue on the east. Railroad lines make up the west and south boundaries along 95th Street. Calumet Heights includes the neighborhoods of Calumet Heights and Pill Hill.
At 91st and Constance Avenue, a large stone outcropping can be found -- the geographical feature for which it is named. It is a stony hill that was once an island when glacial Lake Chicago covered the area thousands of years ago.
Early pioneers of this area gave the hill the name Stony Island because at a distance it looked like an island set in a prairie sea. The Calumet Heights area was swamp and unoccupied throughout the 19th century. When the railroad was built in 1881 along the western border of Chicago Heights, the area began its development as a vital neighborhood in Chicago.
In 2010, Chicago Magazine named Calumet Heights one of the 20 best neighborhoods in the city of Chicago and its suburbs. Calumet Heights is 1.784 square miles in area. Its population at the 2010 census was 17,245. It is located in Cook County.
The average home price is $109,398 . In Calumet City, 19.2% of the population is white, 70.6% of the population is African American, 15% is Hispanic, 0.3% is Asian, 0.6% is Native American, 1.9% is two or more races, 13.13% is White alone, non-Hispanic. About 8.2% of the residents are foreign born.
