Beverly is one of the 77 neighborhoods of Chicago, Illinois., and it is considered one of the most racially and economically diverse communities in the city. It is located on the southwestern edge of the city. The borders are roughly 87th Street on the north, Beverly Avenue, Hale Avenue and Vincennes Road on the east, 107th Street on the south and Francisco Avenue and Western Avenue on the west.
People began moving to the area in the mid-19th century. The population grew rapidly after 1889 when the suburban line of the Rock Island Railroad was completed. Later streetcar lines were added, and many more homes and businesses were built in the area.
Beverly is located on the highest elevation in Chicago and it was originally called Beverly Hills. During World War II, Beverly served as a sanctuary for wounded officers in the Allied Forces from many nations. Beverly is well situated to allow its residents to commute easily to Chicago’s financial markets, shopping areas, airports and other attractions. Public transportation is plentiful, and the Metra Rock Island Railroad is located at the 99th Street station.
At one time Beverly was known as “Blue Island,” even though a suburb of Chicago to the south bears the same name. The color blue was attributed to atmospheric conditions or to blue flowers growing on the ridge of Beverly.
Beverly is home to a large Irish-American community. The community was once home to the South Side Irish Parade, which was held on the Sunday prior to St. Patrick’s Day. It was the largest neighborhood parade of its kind in the country. The neighborhood is still the home of many Irish pubs, the Beverly Art Center and is the site for the Chicago Irish Film Festival. There is also a replica of a castle from Ireland, which was constructed there in the late 19 th century by an American businessman.
A large branch of the Chicago library is located in Beverly and it is home to many of Chicago’s top-rated public elementary schools including, Kellogg, Clissold, Barnard and Sutherland. The community’s public high school is Morgan Park High School.
At the 2010 census, Beverly’s population was 20,034. In Beverly, 58.8 percent of the population is white, 34.1 percent are black, 4.6 percent are Hispanic, 0.6 percent is Asian, and 1.9 percent is other races. Zip codes in the area are 60620, 60643 and 60655. U.S. Highway 57 runs along the east side of a southern portion of Beverly.
Median household income in Beverly is $77,076, compared to $43,628 in Chicago as a whole. Median age in Beverly is 40, compared to 32 in Chicago. In Beverly, 51 percent of the households are families, compared to 43 percent in Chicago. In Beverly, 23 percent of the population has a bachelor’s degree compared to 21 percent in Chicago who hold bachelor’s degrees. The average price of a home in Beverly in 2010 was $270,225, while in Chicago it was $262,859.
About 12 percent of the male residents of Beverly are in management professions, 5.6 percent are in finance, 3.7 percent work with computer technology, 2.1 percent work in architecture or engineering, 21.1 percent work in service jobs, 5.2 percent are in legal occupations, 2.3 percent work in the arts, 2.7 percent work in healthcare, 8.5 percent work in maintenance and 6.3 percent are in education.
