Settled in 1830s by German and Dutch farmers, the Village of Alsip now has a population of over 19,000 residents. The Village was named after an owner of a brickyard that opened in 1885, Frank Alsip. After the Tri-State Tollway was built in 1959, the Village of Alsip began to grow in population.
Alsip is bordered to the west by Worth, Illinois, Crestwood to the south, Oak Lawn to the north and Merrionette Park, Blue Island and Robbins to the east. The Chicago neighborhood of Mt. Greenwood lies to the north and east of the Alsip City line. As most of the town lies north of the Cal-Sag channel, the Village operates a boat launch on a canal which allows limited access to Lake Michigan.
Alsip is home to two predominantly African-American cemeteries Burr Oak and Restvale cemeteries. They are the resting places of many of Chicago's blues musicians including, Muddy Waters, Willie Dixon and Dinah Washington. Emmett Till, whose murder in Mississippi at age 14 in 1955 was an important moment in American Civil Rights, is buried at Burr Oaks Cemetery.
Most of Alsip lies in the First Congressional District in Illinois. Alsip's government consists of a mayor, a clerk and 6 trustees. All of the positions that run the Alsip Village Hall are 4 year terms.
Alsip is well-served by elementary schools, a community high school and a community college, Moraine Community College. Also in the area are many well-known private schools. Alsip is home to the international headquarters of Griffith Laboratories and one of the two Chicago area Coca-Cola bottling plants.
Alsip is located along the Tri-State Tollway which makes it easily accessible to the City of Chicago and surrounding areas.
